TIMBER FLOORS
Just before we go into the beauty of timber just some basic understandings and terminology used. Solid timber floors as they are commonly referred to are generally 19mm thick, tongue and groove with end matching, which basically means that the end of each board has a tongue and a groove as well. This plus the thickness of the timber adds extra strength and durability over the long term. Overlay timber is generally between 12 - 14 mm in thickness, tongue and groove, but not always end matched. This means the end of each board is cut flush and butt joined together. The benefits of overlay flooring can be in its height differences. For example, compare existing tile height to your new timber floor. With overlay flooring being a more cost effective way of having a beautiful timber floor. Timber floors come in a variety of colours, grains, and Janka ratings (hardness). Timber floors are a popular choice because of the beauty of the colour and grain, the warm feeling they project and the fact they are a durable material that can be refinished when the finish becomes worn. They also add to the value of your home. New finishes are available that are very durable and easily cleaned with a vacuum or dust mop. Timber floors are used in almost any room and even in areas of high traffic. They will outlast carpet and resilient floor coverings. One main consideration to be aware off is areas of considerable moisture. Timber floors do not serve well in moist areas. Also on consideration it is important to know your Janka ratings (hardness) as all timbers are different in Janka ratings from softness to hardness. This and your lifestyle will determine how your floor will perform over many years Specialising in Timber Flooring Throughout Melbourne |
